Ever since Joyce and John de Gooijer volunteered at Olkokola, Tanzania, VICS has been connected with Olkokola Vocational Technical School. Young people with disabilities who may not have the opportunity for an education, take a 16 – month program and learn one of four trades: tailoring, carpentry, masonry, or animal husbandry.
When students have completed their program, they are given tools needed to start a business and are followed by school staff for 2 – 3 years, offering advice and mentoring in their new-found skill.
Students not only learn a trade, but self-care skills and are given all medical support possible.
